Move Your Mind is a short exercise to start your week in the realm of Yoga Culture’s Yoga & Writing. Sometimes metaphorical, other time scientific, we explore new directions with fun.

Wrists!
How many of you writers (or yogis) have had wrist pain? It’s one of our body parts that can take a beating as writers.
Rather than push through or simply grab props from the ergonomic section of Staples (if you’re in America, I’m so jealous you can pop to Staples!), we can take preventative measures to help them out and also take a five minute break from the screen or notepad.
If you have any wrist pain at all, please don’t do these drills. Rest and recover…then try the drills as you get better. Below in the notes are a few extra resources.
Notes:
Try to spread your fingers whenever you rest on your hands (for these drills but also in yoga poses). I can talk more about holding the arch of your hand another time, but it doesn’t make much difference for this!
You can keep a micro-bend in your elbows if you have hypermobility (I don’t talk about it in the video but you can see me do it at one point)
Only move to stretch - not to pain!
Place something soft under your knees
You can also give your whole hand and wrist an ice bath if you have any pain
Yoga for arthritis (overview of benefits)
A writer’s guide to health wrists and hands (with a lot of linked resources)
This video is an unedited version from part of my Foundation Courses [live next week]. In the full video, we also look briefly at posture, the spine, moving around the room, and where your gaze is.
Let me know what you’re looking for support with and we can try it here! Also, let us know if there are other wrist exercises you like.
Have a great week.
This was really useful as my husband is having wrist problems at the moment so thank you. Also interested to see you mention hypermobility. I only found out this year that I have it!
Really helpful post.
Thanks for this little movement break! I need to share this with my husband, who's a software engineer. It's funny, when I was doing the wrist circles at the beginning and end of the video, I found myself thinking, "Am I doing this right? Is it circles or figure 8's??" Ha! I bet it doesn't really matter...
